Hawaii ws frequently visited by yankee sailors and I suspect that the steamed brown bread is identical to what we yankees refer to as Boston Brown Bread which is a thick brown bread made with lots of molasses and then steamed instead of baked. I know of no commercial recipies but Irma Rombauer in "Joy of Cooking" describes what looks as a fairly credible rendition of this bread. Burnham and Morril in Portland, Maine used to produce a canned version of the bread but having lived in the San Francisco Bay area for many years I don't know if it is available. It certainly does not appear to be available here.

Best regards,
Chuck
