Its easier than you think,
All sugars are refined to granulated, for brown sugar they mix some of the molasses that were removed, adding molasses to cookies makes them darker and moist.
Recipes that call for half dark and half gran could do just as well with light brown sugar.
I think most of those recipes are written by non bakers, cobbled together from different versions. Then they call it theirs.
Try adding a bit of molasses to gran sugar, stir it around and you get brown sugar.
