I understand your situation more than you will ever know, I've been working high tech for over 20 years and am trying to make the same break for myself. I don't claim to know much, but I'll tell you what I've learned so far. First, ANY venture requires taking risks, and you have to be willing to take those risks if you wish to be successful. Second, I have learned most of what I need to know by doing and pushing forward to make my dream a reality, you don't know what problems will occur until you start trying.
Check with your local SBA, they are an endless source of information. www.sba.org
